We get a fun look behind the scenes of 38 Task Force. As you recall, the story begins by introducing what tax collectors from Seowon City Hall are up against on a daily basis. Search and seizure for delinquent taxes is their daily grind, often met with resistance and disrespect. Sung Il, a mild-mannered, upright government employee won’t play the “I’ll scratch your back and you scratch mine” game and puts his superiors, who count on kickbacks from the corrupt wealthy in exchange for looking the other way, on edge. It seems like Sung Il is swimming upstream in vain.

It’s now or never, sink or swim for our con team. With one last tag session Jung Do lays out the plan. Wallet asks if it’s Chairman Wang’s orders but Jung Do tells her that this time, it is his decision. With Burner and Keyboard recuperating from their injuries, it’s down to Wallet, her assistant Ms. Choi, and Mi Joo along with Sung Il and Jung Do. Sung Il cautiously reminds everyone that if something goes bad they’re on their own to find a way out. You never know when a back-up might be needed.

Sung Il calls to Jung Do to get over to the warehouse – they have an unwelcome guest. Choi Chul Woo tracked them down just to show his face and let them know they aren’t as clever as they might think. One thing is certain; it has caught Jung Do and Sung Il off guard.

I just want to jump right to where they, I mean, it’s so –  I’m dying here – those gangsta shirts, it’s hilarious, what a bunch of actors (*slaps face*)! But forgive me, I’ll begin at the beginning of the episode and get to my favorite part, that is, if I don’t die laughing. But it’s just so funny!

I knew it! Turning in Jung Do was all part of the plan after all. Yay, bromance! When you plan to take down a corrupt system you are in for the long haul or not at all. In this case, it means Jung Do has to endure some jail time and Sung Il, well, he has to play like a whipped puppy and return to being a mundane, uninvolved government worker who’s in it for the pension.

Sung Il picks up oranges on his way home. It’s late. He checks on his mother-in-law and places a few oranges on her night stand as he pulls up her covers. When she stirs and asks if everything is okay he tells her that as long as she is okay things are fine.

As is often the case, things aren’t always what they seem and sometimes there is more than one way to achieve a desired outcome. That is, if everyone can get to a place to see it that way. Also, perspective matters. A lot. Most of all, I just want our bromance partners to get back together!

A burdened Sung Il stops by Jung Do’s apartment and asks him right out if Detective Sa Jae Sung is telling the truth: is Jung Do conning him? For a moment it seems like Sung Il is on the short end of a complicated scheme to bring down Bang Pil Gyu, Woohyung Corporation and its subsidiaries, and the Mayor and expose it all on the news. Jung Do’s descriptive scope of the con job is way larger than Sung Il imagined and he thinks that perhaps he truly is being conned. “Do you mean it?” he asks Jung Do over and over.

Several episode titles came to mind: Things are Getting Complicated; Doubts and Second Thoughts; A Double Date. I settled on A Double Date. Can’t wait for that, but it’s not going to happen until the next episode. In the meantime…

Things were left on an uncertain note last week with Sung Il getting a phone call from Yang Jung Do. I initially thought it had something to do with Jae Sung trying to get to Sung Il through Jung Do, but episode 9 has clarified just what’s going on.

Angry and distraught, Sung Il shows up at Jung Do’s door. He can’t even explain the direness of the situation with an intern unconscious in the hospital and Sang Ho who was bought for money and now…it’s all gone too far. “I need to crush them all. Let’s do one more job.”

Ding dong: collections! Sung Il posts repossession stickers all over a car in the lot. When the owner arrives, she notices the stickers on her windows and angrily gets out of the car to rip them off. Jung Do jumps in a drives off. That should cover the tax bill nicely.

Sa Jae Sung arrests everyone involved in the scam except for Jung Do. “Too bad. You gave me a reason to come after you,” he tells Jung Do and strongly suggests that he stop now before it’s too late. Jung Do says he will get Jin Seok to sign the papers and transfer the money. Jae Sung places the handcuffs on the counter and tells Jung Do to cuff himself when he sees him tomorrow. He walks out.
