LIEBSTER AWARD NOMINATION

post

The Liebster Award is an award given to bloggers from other bloggers to welcome newbies to the blogosphere.  It’s a way to not only recognize and promote new blogs, but to facilitate bloggers getting to know each other in the blogging community.

Thank you, Elle, for nominating me for the Liebster Award (which I had to look up since I’d never heard of it before). It is a great way to get newbie bloggers like me in circulation and to connect with other bloggers. Credit goes to dramabeans, the site that brought many of us together and continues to serve as a kdrama community.

Here are my answers to Elle’s 11 questions.

  1. Why did you start blogging? Initially, this was a place to display my Korean inspired art. It has evolved to include combining my love of writing and  Korean entertainment and the thoughts that spill over when they collide.
  2. How did you come up with your blog’s name? My blog name is my nickname, Cimi, plus my focus, art: cimiart. I also made Korean entertainment the parameters for my art, so mostly it includes K-pop and K-drama inspired drawings.
  3. What have you found the most challenging about blogging? Time and interesting things to blog about are the most challenging aspects. Oh, and formatting – my earlier posts are a mess – but long story short, I hooked up with a super beanie who provides incredible formatting help. Also, getting an audience to my blog and vise versa is a challenge, although the Blood recaps have produced incredibly shocking results. Fitting in time to draw now that I am recapping is something I would like to do a better job at balancing.
  4. What was the first Korean drama you ever watched and how did you discover it? I always say my first Korean drama was Pasta, but the more I think about it, I wonder if it wasn’t Coffee House. Anyhoot, those two came first back in 2012, and I’ve watched them multiple times. It took a while for me to realize there were scads of kdramas and it was a huge thing, the Korean wave as it is called, and I kind of felt deprived for not having known about it sooner. Actually, my brother first discovered kdramas and we watched the first two together, but I have long since left him in the dust. The other memorable first in kdramas is Faith, which was the first time I stumbled upon dramabeans and joined in the discussion. I was sucked into the proverbial black hole of watching, reading recaps, discussing, rewatching, and mulling over, and over and over…
  5. What is your all-time favorite song from a K-drama OST? The OST isn’t really that important to me, I did like Milk Tea in Love Rain, it was a cute little song. I often wake up with a tune playing in my head and it takes me a really long time to place where it is from – usually a kdrama. I find the American songs in kdramas curious, too. Because of your question, I will probably start paying more attention to OSTs.
  6. If you were stuck on a deserted island with only two K-dramas to watch (in perpetuity), which dramas would you choose? Why? I never grow tired of Coffee Prince, there are so many tropes in it that make kdramas what they are.  Same goes for City Hunter and Personal Taste, both Lee Min Ho kdramas. I’d be content with these on my deserted island.
  7. Name your top three favorite second leads from a K-drama. Seo Kang Joon (Cunning Single Lady);  Yoo Yeon Seok (Chilbongi in Reply 1994); Kim Ji Hoon (Flower Boys Next Door) for the way he anonymously watched over Dok Mi, even though I am a huge Enrique (Yoon Si Yoon) fan! btw, isn’t he getting out of the Army soon?? I could go on, Jeremy in You’re Beautiful; Woo Bin in Heirs. There’s a reason why it’s called second lead syndrome.
  8. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Maybe how many places I’ve lived.
  9. What is your favorite word? mountain ~ for the many beautiful images it conjures up, for my preferred destination, for directional location that provides stability and footing in life~  산
  10. Coffee or tea? Coffee. Always and forever. Lots of it. No flavors.
  11. What inspires you? Colors in nature, the big questions in life, the small things that often go unnoticed.

  1. Whoo hoo! Congratulations! Much deserved. 🙂

I often wake up with a tune playing in my head and it takes me a really long time to place where it is from – usually a kdrama.

    So true!

I find the American songs in kdramas curious, too.

How funny! Just yesterday I finally started my list of American songs you hear over and over again. (Or really English language, because some are from other countries.) I can anticipate when they’re about to start… “Oh, yeah, here it comes!” I’ve been meaning to do this list for some time, but when I heard Leonard Cohen’s “I’m Your Man” yet again, this time while watching Grandpas Over Flowers, Greece”, I had to stop what I was doing and start jotting. I know there are others, but the ones off the top of my head, starting with the 3 used all the time:

    Holiday, The Bee Gees (1967)
I’m Your Man, Leonard Cohen (1988)
Ode To My Family, The Cranberries (1994)

    Fuzzier on these…maybe…

The First Time Ever I saw Your Face, recorded by various folk singers earlier but became a hit for Roberta Flack in 1972.
    Y.M.C.A., The Village People (1978)
Is That All There Is? Peggy Lee (1969)
Girl From Ipanema, Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz (1963)

I’m forgetting some. I know there are a few jazzy ones, too… one on the tip of my tongue.

Any others to add to the list?

Congratulations again Cimi. You’ve earned the praise.

    • More English songs:
Nice Guy, San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)
It’s Okay It’s Love, Hero by Family of the Year
Let It Be tune used on the weekly skit on Gag Concert
Thanks, revlow, for the encouragement and support!

    • Oh, and I still laugh to myself about “Impossible Dream” in What’s Up? The singer (I think it was Daesung, from Big Bang) sang it for an audition in Korean, and then it was subbed in English, but it wasn’t the exact words, so I wonder if the subber knew it was already an English song, in which case, you could just put up the real words and not have to translate from Korean to English. Go figure.

      • That’s funny.

Yeah, I was aiming for the songs that are heard over and over again. Sort of like go-to soundtrack plug-ins. Hero was unusual, or at least in my experience: one English song used as the primary soundtrack. (I haven’t seen Nice Guy.)

Then there is this phenomenon: a song in a popular kdrama being used later (which has been happening with Hero lately). I think this occurs more often in variety shows. Not just songs, but the instrumental OST. Some cooking going on? Throw in the fast passage from Pasta, when the kitchen would get super busy the chefs super intense, no dialog. Something scary? A riff from The Master’s Sun. Something sexy about to go down, or someone thinking they’re super sexy? Well, that’s when they bring out Leonard Cohen. (By the way, I love him.)

I got curious about what’s up with Leonard Cohen. So far I’ve found one cover version of a Cohen song and two albums printed in Korea listed, but nothing more detailed, nothing specific about the fascination.

      • Oops. I should have been more clear. It was one Korean cover version of a Cohen song, by Yoon Sol-Ha — his original “Dance me to the end of love” re-titled “A mute violin”. And they were two of Leonard Cohen’s own albums that were printed in Korea.

  2. Cimi. Love your thoughtful and articulate answers! That is the great thing about the award—getting to know the bloggers thru these questions.

Several things stuck out from your answers–like how to grow readership, which is a battle and from all that I’ve researched it just takes time. I was tooling around Thundie’s Prattle the other day and came across a post she wrote about how recapping increased her readers a lot. So apparently that’s the name of the game. Good luck finding the balance between recapping and posting your art–which is really great!

As for drama watching, I could write a book in response to your answers. But I will exercise some self control and only say two things (1) I luuuurrrrvvvveeed Chilbongie too (let’s chat about him later, shall we?) and (2) pay attention to the music from now on! Some of it is great.

  3. Congratulations! It was fun reading another person’s answers to the same questions. AGHHH HOW DID I FORGET JIN-ROK?! He was probably my second SLS after The Voice. I not only adored him, I commiserated with him. If he were real, we would’ve been drinking buddies. I’ve heard that about recapping increasing traffic, but I’ll be stubborn awhile longer. I’m already procrastinating concerning the things on the blog that I want to do, so any more than that would be murder. Or suicide.

  5. Congratulations, Cimi!!! Great news, and well deserved!
I’ve really enjoyed our wide-ranging discussions on this site, and look forward to exchanging further thoughts, squees and recipes!
Pasta, Chilbongie and Jeremy (not to mention Kim Ji Hoon and Yoon Si Yoon) … excellent choices all! 🙂

    • Thanks for the cheers, thursdaynexxt. This has turned into a fun place for viewers of a variety of Korean entertainment shows to share comments about our biases and even rant from time to time. Fingers crossed on subbers for AS and My Friend’s Home, I am always so disappointed when subs drop off midway in a show.

      • That helps a lot, a picture perfect trio in the world of K entertainment which, as you mentioned, is abrupt and without much warning in dropping shows these days. It’s enough to make me a bit glum to know that Roommate is windong down. Recaps to come, they’re late due to me being out of town. Will return in a couple of days and catch up on stuff.

      • Wow! That was a quick turnaround. Subs for this Running Man up already at kshowonline. Have only watch the 1st few mins and looks really interesting.

      • This is something the two of you can probably answer. What exactly constitutes a “comeback”? In the US it generally is at least a couple years for any type of entertainer. From what I keep seeing in S Korea it seems like it can be almost zilch time in between. With recording artists it seems more synonymous with say “next release”. For example, EXO just had their album Overdose last year, and as I remember a couple hit singles off it, and yet according to that article:

Moving up nine spots to No. 4 is EXO’s well anticipated comeback hit “Call Me Baby.” This song is the title track of EXO’s second full album “EXODUS.”

They even had a live album in December. (Or I’m I getting EXO-K and EXO-M mixed up?)

Can you enlighten me? The whole thing seems odd.

      • I know, so confusing, right?

Putting together bits and pieces I’ve read/heard, I think a “comeback” (in k-pop at least) involves the promotional cycle around an artist (who has already debuted) releasing a new song or album, as revlow said. I look at it as including teaser clips, song MVs, stage acts like Inkigayo and other promo activities (as opposed to promoting/touring overseas, or just appearing on variety shows as an idol/celebrity).

I’ve even seen some suggestions that an artist comeback happens every time they release a new single/album on the charts (which makes me wonder … if a song doesn’t hit the top 100 chart, is it not considered a ‘comeback’? If so, what about all the great little indie bands etc?) I guess the artist has to be pretty popular in the first place for them to achieve a “comeback”.

I agree with revlow – actors seem to do “comebacks” in the orthodox sense, after they’ve been away for a while for whatever reason (scandal, working overseas, in the army, having a family, etc). K-pop artists seem to do comebacks even if they’ve never been out of the limelight.

      • Actually maybe in that example it makes more sense re: “comeback hit”. But I’ve seen plenty of examples of bands and singers where they talk about “their comeback” as if they’ve been out of the game for quite some time, when really very little time has past and it’s just their next album/single/tour. With actors, I think it does seem to be a bit more time.

Anyway, I find the whole thing curious. Maybe it’s a translation problem? But if so, it’s a long-standing translation problem.

    • Great, Wag_a_Muffin, looking forward to reading your responses. Your cartoons are clever, and, although you probably have a wide audience on Dramafever, perhaps this will enlarge the circle of fans through another site. Post your answers on your blog and put a link to my site (so that it creates a loop – I did the same with the person who nominated me and linked back to her site). Then I will make a notation on my Liebster post, and so it continues…. Congratulations!
